Jo’s Hope was founded in 2009 by Jo James, a 58 year old Easton, PA resident. Being a three time breast cancer survivor, Jo was appalled to learn after her third diagnosis, through research, that the make-up of breast cancer is often different in women of color (especially black women). The cancer is often more invasive and more aggressive. Therefore, standard treatments are not always as effective and the mortality rate is also much higher than that of caucasion women. Jo also learned that healthy women of color are needed for research in finding more effective treatment options. While trying to search for as much information as possible on the internet regarding this subject matter, Jo discovered that there was not very much information available and could find only one website dedicated to Breast Cancer among Black Women. Upon learning these facts, Jo felt that more needed to be done to provide research, education and awareness to the plight of Breast Cancer among women of color. Thus, the idea of establishing a non-profit foundation for women of color was born. The foundation is currently in its infancy stage but the dream has to start somewhere and hope for the cure is in all of our hands!
